I had a very small styrofoam cup of coffee on my desk. It was less than 1/4 full. So why is it, when I knocked it over, a coffee version of Lake Michigan formed on my desk?

I hate (h8) when you think you’ve gotten all the spilled coffee cleaned but then a week later you find the sticky residue of the stuff you missed. That happened to me in my dorm in college and I will never, ever forget the smell.
